The effect of induction heating was discovered by Michael Faraday in 1881 and was seen for a long time as a negative side-effect in the use of transformers.

The EFD group was founded in 1996 by a merger of ELVA Induksjon a.s. from Norway (established in 1981) and by Fritz Düsseldorf Freiburg GmbH Germany (established in 1950).

The roots of the EFD group are going back to 1950 when the German company Fritz Düsseldorf GmbH (FDF) launched its first stationary induction hardening machine to the German market.

While FDF expanded during the 1970ies, in Norway a pioneering and epoch-making development became its readiness for marketing. Engineers developed how to design transistorized frequency converter for induction heating.

In 1981, three Norwegian engineers founded ELVA Induksjon. The new company had only nine employees. But it also had its MINAC range of mobile converters, which was successfully launched in 1983. Workpieces no longer had to be brought at great cost to a stationary induction heater - the heater could now go to the piece

In 1991, the managing directors of FDF and ELVA met at a trade exhibition. They recognized the potential of its counterpart and the possibilities which could develop by a merger of the two companies. During the years between 1991 and 1996 ELVA Induksjon expanded and established a sales and service organisation network all over Europe, and also in Austria.

After ABB has spun off its induction heating division and shut down the production of valve generators in Vienna, several employees launched its own business. This company became short time later the Austrian subsidiary of ELVA Induksjon, which is successfully running its business in sales and service in the Austrian market and many of the surrounding countries.

In January 1996, FDF and ELVA merged and founded EFD Induction.

By the continuous expansion course on the sector of induction companies the structure of EFD grew and adapted to the market requirements:

  • 1998  CFEI und Sodalgo, Frankreich
  • 2000  Crossley Technology Ltd., Großbritannien
  • 2001  Gründung von EFD China
  • 2002  Robotron USA
  • 2007  Inductro Romania, Enel Poland, Foundation of EFD Induction in Thailand
  • 2008  Friendly take-over of 49% from TEKNA Plasma Systems in Canada

Today EFD Induction is the largest manufacturer of induction heating equipments all over Europe. We are already no. two in the world, but we have an ambitious goal for the future – to change the ranking.
